Why every beekeeper should have TempQueen in their freezer before the next season starts
TempQueen is a tiny plastic strip containing synthetic Queen Mandibular Pheromone, or QMP. It is one of the key chemical signals that a bee colony uses to make sure that they have a healthy mated queen with them. As the queen moves through the colony or is touched by workers, QMP is spread throughout the hive and reinforces that the queen is still there. If your queen is dead or just elsewhere (like if she's temporarily inside the observation hive that you're taking to the local elementary school for a talk about bees), TempQueen lets you convince the bees in the hive that all is well until you can give them a living queen bee again.
TempQueen can be safely shipped in a wide range of outside temperatures, but it should be stored in a freezer to keep it stable until you're ready to pop it into a hive. What better time to buy an item you want to keep cold than winter, when the temperature in the back of a mail truck and inside your mailbox is just what the product needs to stay freshest?
More importantly, TempQueen is a product that you don't need, until all of a sudden you need it very badly. If you find that you have a queenless colony, you don't want to start shopping for a temporary queen replacer. It would be best if you had this tool waiting in your freezer so that you can deploy it when you suddenly need it.
Check out the YouTube video below all about TempQueen. It shows why it's such a useful tool to have on hand in case of queen emergencies:
