In 2000, Betterbee introduced the BeeMax line of ultra-insulating polystyrene hive components which help keep hives warm through cold weather, and cool when temperatures rise. If reasonable care is taken, a BeeMax hive should last just as long as a wooden hive.
BeeMax medium polystyrene supers fit perfectly on top of a hive body. Wooden honey supers fit nicely on top of a BeeMax hive, but the walls are thicker, so a portion of the top of the BeeMax hive wall will be exposed. If you plan to use wooden honey supers, simply paint this area when you paint your hives. Pests, such as ants, mice, and wax moths, are no more of a problem in BeeMax polystyrene hive components than in wooden hives. If the hives are strong, your bees will keep these pests out themselves.
