Managing bee space (space absent of comb or propolis where bees can freely roam) is important to aid in ventilation, temperature control, and helps prevent abnormal comb growth. Our deep follower board is made with a piece of plywood and takes up the space of about 1/2 of a normal frame. Typically one frame is removed from the hive, and one follower board is placed at each outer wall of the hive. It is also common to use just one follower board in a hive that doesn't have enough room for an additional frame, but needs something to take up space.
If you are using 8 frames inside of a 10 frame hive body, or need to reduce your frame count below the hive's designated size, you should introduce follower boards so that you can then space the remaining frames closer together. If frames are too far apart, bees will build comb outward in a more dome like shape to reduce space
