To re-queen a hive, it is best to remove the old queen a few days before installing the new queen. If it is a populous colony, you can insert a queen excluded between the two brood chambers. After a few days, the chamber with fresh eggs contains the queen and now you have cut your search area in half. Once the old queen has been removed and the colony has rested a few days, you are ready to install a new queen. Be sure the cork covering the sugar candy has been removed for the cage. Put the cage in the center of the hive between two frames with the candy end up. Check after 3-5 days to be sure the queen has been released. If she has not, you can manually release her at this time.
