| Instructional Sheet on Using Your Candle Mold
Equipment:
Melting the Wax: Please read instructions and have your molds ready before starting, as melted wax is highly flammable. Cover work area with cardboard or wax paper (wax side up) and yourself with an apron to protect from wax drippings. For safety, separate your pouring area from your wax melting area. Place wax in the top of the double boiler or place melting container on a trivet or wire rack in a larger, heavy bottom pan containing water. Turn on the heat. DO NOT LEAVE THE WAX UNATTENDED! The wax will take some time to melt so don't let your larger pan with water go dry. Use the thermometer to check for proper temperature (Beeswax - 150-160F. Soft Paraffin 170-180F.) before pouring the wax. When proper pouring temperature is reached, add scent or coloring at this time. Turn off heat and use a ladle to carefully transfer wax to the pouring pot. Single Sided Molds: Make sure your ornament hangers, (ribbons, cord, etc.) are pre-cut and ready to use before pouring the ornaments. The wax hardens quickly. Figure Molds: Some molds may come with a "T" pin in the bottom of each mold to mark the hole the wicking will go through. Use a large wicking needle to wick the mold. Leave a substantial length of wicking out the bottom of the mold. Then, each time you remove a candle from the mold, you will draw up the wick and re-wick the mold. Most molds are split to make removal of the candle very easy. (Not necessary for smooth candles.) Some molds come with rubber bands to hold the seams together, so be careful to align the split. A larger bobby pin will hold your wick in the center of the mold. Tapered Tube Molds: Thread the wick through the eye of the wicking needle. If the mold has a "T" pin, remove the pin at the bottom of the mold. Slide the wicking tool through the hole left by the pin, pulling the wicking through the hole. Be sure you leave an ample supply for wicking at the bottom of the mold for instant re-wicking. Use the bobby pin to hold the wick in place. Brace the taper mold securely so that it will not fall over. The cardboard tube from paper towels works well, or try our taper candle mold holder (TMH1 or TMH2).
Allow the wax to cool and harden - time required will vary with size of mold. Remove bobby pin and rubber bands, open the mold and remove the candle. Clip the wick approximately one inch longer than the candle. If needed, trim the base and seams with a paring knife, or use a hot cast iron skillet or our base finisher to melt down the base and seams.
