New queens are now up to around $10.00 each, so it doesn't take long to see why a Queen Rearing Kit makes sense. Now you can raise as many queens as you want - all with no grafting! Plus, you are always sure of the age of the eggs that you want the bees to make into queens. Our Queen Rearing Kit comes with a Queen Box, 110 Cell Cups, and 2 Bars with 20 Cell Bar Fixtures and 20 Cup Holders installed. (Ship Wt: 2 lbs.)
How to use:
- Place the Queen in the Laying Box (the bedroom) - it contains the Plastic Cell Cups (the only place that the Queen can lay her eggs.
- After 24 hours, take the Queen out of the Laying Box and select some of the egg-filled Cell Cups for your queen starting colony,
- Place these Cell Cups on the Cell Cup Holder in your Queen Starting Frame, The bees will feed the eggs royal jelly so that they will become queens.
Note: Most of you are probably wondering why you need 110 Cell Cups for just 20 Holders. You don't have to use all the Cell Cups with eggs in them and, furthermore, the queen may not lay in them at all. 20 Cells are about right for 1 Finisher Hive. Besides, the bees in the starter hive might not accept all the eggs. If you want to be able to raise more than 20 queens at a time, order extra Cell Bars and start extra Finisher Hives. When the Cells are 10 days old in your starter colonies, remove them and put them in your nucs. The queens will hatch out and hopefully be accepted by the new colony. If you prefer, you can purchase Cages that fit over the Cells in the Starter Hive. Then, each queen can hatch out right in the Starter. Without these Cages, the first queen that hatches will kill all the others. You can then place the caged virgin queen in the new Hive. You must either put a Candy Cup in the cage so that the bees can release the queen themselves by eating through the candy, or you can simply leave the queen in the cage for 3 or 4 days until the bees are used to her. Then simply release her yourself.
Hint: If you (like me) are incapable of being able to perform a graft, you will find this item to be a real godsend. We feel even the beekeeper who only occasionally grafts is much better off with this system. |
