Feeding Bees

Regular monitoring of colonies is necessary to determine when and how much supplemental feed is necessary.

  • Packages and nucs need to be fed initially to support comb building and brood production.
  • Overwintered hives may need to be fed in the spring to prevent starvation if early flowers are delayed by bad weather.
  • Feeding is often necessary to supplement honey stored in the fall to provide enough resources for the winter.
  • Solid feeds such as Winter Patties or fondant are necessary if emergency feeding is required during the winter months.
