Apivar has recently received EPA section 3 approval for use in all 50 states for the control of Varroa mites. Amatraz, a synthetic pesticide is the active ingredient in Apivar strips. It has been used in many countries for the last 15 years and has proven safe and effective without producing any significant chemical residues in honey or wax. Two strips per brood chamber are hung between frames and left for the treatment period is 42 days. Apivar is most effectively used before the honeyflow or after honey supers are removed. Honey supers must be removed during the 42 day treatment period and for 14 days after strips are removed. Be sure to read and follow all label directions for Apivar. It is necessary to monitor mite levels in order to determine when colonies need to be treated.
