This innovative, leak-proof Hive Top Feeder is so much better than the old wooden style. In fact, it is practically maintenance free. This version specifically designed for the 10 Frame Wooden Hives, is constructed of a seamless, one-piece polystyrene unit and it NEVER needs sealing or resealing. Bees enter at the front and are kept from the bulk of the syrup by a Plexiglass panel. We also offer a version for 8 Frame Wooden Hives.

Hint 1: Paint the outside of this feeder with two coats of a good exterior latex paint.

Hint 2: Roughen the Plexiglass panel on the inside to give bees better grip so they don't fall into the syrup.

Making Sugar Syrup: For fall feeding, add enough water to 24 lbs. of sugar to make 3 gallons. For spring feeding, add enough water to 18 lbs. of sugar to make 3 gallons. Mixtures should be 75% solids by weight for fall feeding and 67% by weight for spring feeding. Thicker syrups in fall ensure good consumption rates and higher volume feeding in spring ensures colony build up. Some beekeepers recommend putting Honey Bee Healthy to ensure less mold, but always remember to remove feeders with moldy syrup and clean them well before reapplying the feeder and feed. Do not leave feed on indefinitely untended as bees will access feed only when they need it and abandon it in some cases long enough for mold spores to develop.

Ms

I have this feeder, and while drowning was a bit of an issue last year (my first year raising bees) and mold was also a bit of an issue the feeder itself is great and I will be buying one for each of my new hives, as it can be filled without disturbing the hive and the bees seem so much happier about that. (I have an in-hive type of feeder, but i am not so impressed with it.)

Mr.

I feel this feeder works great! I used the advise of others to score the inside of the plexiglass to help the bees grip to it. Also, i floated a small full length wooden dowel between the plexiglass and the polystyrene divider. This dropped my drowing down to essentially zero. if not present, i found the bees get so packed in the feeder, they push one another to their death.

Ms.

I LOVE this feeder. Makes feeding bees easy and convenient. It's the easiest thing I've found to feed bees. I'm ordering replacements because my husband threw out the plexiglass parts by accident! Wish there was some way to minimize mold that can develop inside the syrup bowl and stop the plexiglass from warping over time. I'll try apple cider vinegar. Could you develop a liner that's easy to put in the dishwasher or scrub out by hand? Thanks for making great products!

BeeMax® Hivetop Feeder for 10 Frame Wooden Hives

Ordered two of these feeders which are GREAT! They reduce robbing with fall feedings which is a plus for me due to German yellow jackets. I painted the outside with two coats of latex paint as recommended. I also used sand paper on the plexiglass once I removed the film from both sides. You can reduce the amount of mold by adding some apple cider vinegar to your syrup. The capacity is great because I only need to fill it up about once a week when feeding.

BeeMax Hive top feeder-10 frame

I thought this would be great for use in northern Minnesota. I purchased 4 units in the spring of 2011. BIG MISTAKE! I DO NOT recommend this product. (MINUS) -4 star rating. Bees drowned and the syrup became moldy.

Betterbee Response.  Please note the product information above for hints and tips to prevent drowning.  No feeder is mold proof  but there are steps you can take to mitigate the over 75,000 known species of mold on the earth such as not leaving feed in when the bees aren't  in need of feed and using less feed.
